Instituto Colombiano de Medicina Tropical\u00a0 (ICMT) de la Universidad CES realizaron un estudio sobre <em>Blastocystis<\/em>, uno de los par\u00e1sitos intestinales con mayor frecuencia en el tracto intestinal humano que afecta a m\u00e1s de 1.000 millones de personas en todo el mundo, dependiendo de las condiciones sociodemogr\u00e1ficas, h\u00e1bitos higi\u00e9nicos y prestaci\u00f3n de servicios p\u00fablicos. Se considera que la poblaci\u00f3n infantil es la m\u00e1s afectada en los pa\u00edses en desarrollo.\u00a0<\/p><p>En la investigaci\u00f3n se realiz\u00f3 una caracterizaci\u00f3n epidemiol\u00f3gica y molecular de la infecci\u00f3n en cinco centros infantiles de Medell\u00edn de las comunas 1,3, 10 y 16, (puntos estrat\u00e9gicos para los resultados, considerando la facilidad de acceso a agua potable y condiciones de higiene) en la que se incluyeron 265 ni\u00f1os de 0 a 5 a\u00f1os.<\/p><p>Se realizaron jornadas de capacitaci\u00f3n sobre la importancia del lavado de manos en la prevenci\u00f3n de infecciones producidas por par\u00e1sitos intestinales dirigida a docentes, padres de familia y estudiantes de estos centros. All\u00ed, se tomaron muestras para el diagn\u00f3stico de par\u00e1sitos intestinales mediante examen directo y PCR convencional, para lograr la identificaci\u00f3n molecular de <em>Blastocystis<\/em> y sus subtipos.<\/p><p><em>\u201cEsta investigaci\u00f3n es de las pocas que se han realizado en el pa\u00eds sobre caracterizaci\u00f3n molecular para identificar los diferentes subtipos del par\u00e1sito. Es poca la informaci\u00f3n al respecto, principalmente en Medell\u00edn, donde no hay estad\u00edsticas actuales de la frecuencia de la bacteria\u201d,<\/em> asegur\u00f3 Mar\u00eda Isabel Osorio Pulgar\u00edn, bacteri\u00f3loga del ICMT.<\/p><p>Esta investigaci\u00f3n es novedosa porque es la primera vez que se realiza subtipificaci\u00f3n de este par\u00e1sito en una poblaci\u00f3n infantil de Medell\u00edn y como resultado, se identific\u00f3 un nuevo subtipo del par\u00e1sito que no hab\u00eda sido previamente reportado en humanos.<\/p><p>La primera parte de los resultados de la investigaci\u00f3n fueron publicados en la revista <em>Biology<\/em> este a\u00f1o. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2079-7737\/10\/7\/669\"><strong>Conoce m\u00e1s.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/p><p>Adem\u00e1s, los expertos esperan publicar las caracter\u00edsticas epidemiol\u00f3gicas de los participantes y seguir desarrollando estudios m\u00e1s complejos y avances en la identificaci\u00f3n y clasificaci\u00f3n parasitaria.<\/p><p>El equipo de trabajo se conform\u00f3 por Maria Isabel Osorio Pulgar\u00edn, Juan Camilo Beltr\u00e1n Alzate y Miryan Margot Sanchez Jim\u00e9nez, en conjunto con los investigadores del Grupo de Investigaciones Microbiol\u00f3gicas (GIMUR) de la Universidad del Rosario, Juan David Ramirez y Adriana
